Graphic design vs accessibility.

Graphic design vs accessibility.

It's the age old question, brains or beauty, form or function? The constant battle between having something that is visually appealing or sacrificing some of that form for inclusiveness.

As the internet is being used by more and more people there are a lot more things to consider.

  • Could the effects cause seizures.

  • Are the colours readable, even to the colourblind.

  • Can the website function on any device.

  • Can any of the transitions cause motion-sickness.

  • Is there a light and dark more?

The internet has to be accessible to everyone, and with this it seems that the fun of it all is taken away. All these restrictions imposed really kills your ability for good design on the internet, right? Well, not necessarily.

If you think of them like guidelines instead of restrictions, then being able to pull off good designs, while keeping them highly accessible is seen as a huge positive. It's up to us as pioneers of the internet to make sure it's inclusive to everyone. This doesn't mean we are barred from making cool, flashy websites but that there is a time and place for it.

With the big million user websites of course we have to be inclusive, make sure that everyone can experience the joys of that website and want to be able to show it off. The time for showing off your design skills in all its flashy animated glory is within your own portfolio websites, the ones where you know not everyone will attempt to use it, and the added effect will help you land that job.
